in the beginning...

I was only sixteen years old, but was very strong from cleaning my dad's tavern...maybe I should workout.

I lived in Marion, Indiana and was the son of a family who had been in the bar business for years. Every Sunday, since the taverns were closed, it was my job to clean the place. That meant, not only cleaning out the toilets but also moving all the tables, filling up the beer bins and moving the beer boxes from one end of the place to the other. Unfortunately for me, my dad had a big place. It would take me about four hours to clean it and strange as it may seem, I actually looked forward to it. I was pretty skinny as a kid and didn't have much self-esteem. Luckily there was a YMCA downtown and decided to check it out to see if they had a weight room. As luck may have it, not only did they have an area devoted to weights and training, they also had a guy there named Bill Starr, who would eventually go on to become one of the most knowledgable guys in the sport. I became part of their weightlifting team and traveled to different meets and along the way, won my share of trophies. As the years rolled by, I continued to train in college at the University of Alabama and was pretty successful on the powerlifting platform. Setting a couple of deadlifting records along the way.

Jump ahead 40 years and I'm still at the gym everyday. That's the main reason I've dedicated myself to this website. To stress that you don't ever have to stop working out. My life has taken some unexpected turns along the way, but I've managed to endure and alot of that credit goes to the fact that when I'm down and depressed about certain things that are out of my control, I can always go workout and by the time I'm finished, I have a totally different look on life. I hope that I can pass on to you some of the knowledge that I've acquired and share with you the passion I have for keeping in shape. By the way, my name is Rick Magers, welcome to my site...
